                          iconic figures past & present

Many people displayed here are known to have exhibited traits suggesting autism, and their related diversities, but have never received a professional evaluation. We can only address the facts that their histories have provided us. Some lived in a time before autism was recognized as an accepted condition. Those closer to our time may not choose not to live openly for fear of the stigma that people with differences often face. ASPERGERIAN NATION apologizes for the intrusion into their lives. It is not our intention to out anyone living past or present. Each may have had their own private struggled with their place within the spectrum.

Greta Thunberg, 16, delivered a withering speech on climate change before the United Nations General Assembly, shaming world leaders for failing to take action. “How dare you,” she said. “You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.”

Thunberg said that speaking truth to those in power, and shaming those who need shaming, had helped her drive home the need for action against the growing climate-change crisis. Another asset, she said, was her neurological diagnosis. “I have Asperger’s, I’m on the autism spectrum, so I don’t really care about social codes that way. I’m sometimes a bit different from the norm, and given the right circumstances being different is a superpower.”

Greta has been named as one of the 100 most influential people of 2019 by Time magazine and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I became obsessed by Hans Holzer, the greatest ghost hunter ever. That’s when the idea of my film Ghostbusters was born.”

hans asperger autism, aspergers, Aspergian, aspergian nation, autistic, neuro diversity
Ironically, as a child Hans Asperger appears to have exhibited features of the very condition named after him. He was described as a remote and lonely child, who had difficulty making friends. He was talented in language, in particular he was interested in the German poet Franz Grillparzer whose poetry he would frequent quote to his uninterested classmates. Asperger died before his identification of this pattern of behaviour became widely recognized because his work was mostly in German and little-translated. The first person to use the term “Asperger’s Syndrome” in a paper was British researcher Lorna Wing. Her paper, Asperger’s syndrome: a clinical account was published in 1981 and challenged the previously accepted model of autism presented by Leo Kanner in 1943. The reason most think Hans was someone on the high end of the spectrum is because of how he instinctively understood the needs of his patients.  He simply could identify with them.
hans andersen christian autism, aspergers, Aspergian, aspergian nation, autistic, neuro diversity
Andersen was a Danish author known for his children’s fairy tales, such as “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Little Mermaid” (which is a heart-wrenching tragedy when compared with the Disney version). As a child, he was gangly and effeminate, and prone to strange tantrums. His journals indicate a strange pattern of pining after unattainable men and women, and a privately enforced celibacy early in life. Upon close examination, his stories seem to be indicative of a deep inner turmoil, often featuring strange or misunderstood characters who are not always fortunate enough to find redemption.

I'm a hard-wired nerd with symptoms I'm told border on Asperger's Syndrome. That means I'm too trusting, often socially inept, have difficulty shifting focus, and frequently am unsure what to do in situations others handle easily.
